What is your background?
Jennifer Mason has photographed over 100 births in Michigan and Colorado since 2013. Jennifer is a trained doula and well established in the international birth photography community. Birth center stories are some of the most beautiful and inspiring and I’m honored to document them with the wonderful women at 9 Short Months.
Do I have to pay for this service?
Yes. 9 Short Months greatly subsidizes the cost of birth photography. Jennifer regularly charges between 2000-3000 dollars for birth photography outside of the center, but she's able to offer birth center families discounted packages.
Do I really want a birth photographer?
The number one regret I hear from moms is that they didn't have their birth story captured. I believe that the day you give birth will be one of the most powerful and life-changing moments of your life. Having a professional birth photographer capture your birth day will allow you to remember both the intensity and the joy of meeting your baby for the very first time. Additionally, birth photos are a great tool to help you process your birth story. Your midwives love to look at your photos with you, answering questions you might have about your birth story.
I'm afraid how I'll look! I don't know if I want someone capturing me pushing!
As a highly experienced photographer, I am incredibly mindful about capturing you in a way that is both flattering and empowering. My clients regularly tell us they've never felt as beautiful or as strong once they look at their birth images.
I don't want any crowning images, is that okay?
Absolutely! I ask you to fill out a form that let's us know the type of images you want...and the types of images you don't want. I will always respect your wishes, this is your story.
How soon will I receive my images?
I like to send you a sneak peek within 24 hours of giving birth. These images are great for birth or social media announcements! Then, I work hard to have your gallery completed and delivered within 3 weeks and if you have added on videography, that may take another 2 weeks. Your gallery will include between 50-100 hand-edited images, and you'll be able to choose the photos you'd like to download.

What happens if I have to transfer?
If you need to transfer before labor begins, we transfer your session fee to a Welcome Session (fresh 48) at the hospital, birth center, or at your home. I also offer you a lifestyle newborn session.
If you need to transfer during labor, you always have the option to hire us to follow you to the hospital. If you decide to transfer without a birth photographer, we will offer you a Welcome Session whenever you're ready.
Who notifies you to come?
We love to stay in touch with you. Because birth is SO unpredictable, the more information we can have the better.
The midwives do a great job of updating us, but I’d love to hear from you too! Text when you feel like labor is starting, so I am best able to prepare my family.
What are your current package offerings?
Welcome Session (takes place AFTER birth at your 2-day Postpartum Appointment) for $450
Birth Photography with 20 images that you choose, stay for 1 hour postpartum - $995
ALL of your birth images edited (approx 70-80), stay for 2 hours postpartum - $1295
ALL birth images plus a 2-3 minute birth film - $1895
Maternity Session or Newborn session - $425
Studio Session in Chelsea, Michigan - $295
Do I need to pay ahead of time?
Yes. I don't want you worrying about paying anyone after you give birth. It also assures our team that you want us to join you on your special day! We accept credit card and payment just needs to be made by 37 weeks - we have payment plans available to fit the needs of your family!
